While many of us in the 1st District are worried about putting food on our tables, our Congressman Dr. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) recently took a week long “fact finding mission” (otherwise known as vacation to us common folk) to Israel during the recent congressional recess.
It cost $15,451.68 and was paid for by the American Israel Education Foundation. Now while Dr. Roe was adamantly opposed to taking PAC money during his first run for Congress – and so far he has kept this promise – that opposition apparently does not extend to taking money for congressional travel junkets.
In my opinion, if it comes down to taking PAC money or taking “fact finding mission” money, take the PAC money, Phil! At least the PAC money represents interests in the United States. If you really need an education about Israel, we have institutions called libraries and the Internet, and it’s much cheaper.
When someone else is paying for it, who cares? Right? As Mel Brooks said in the movie History of the World, Part I, “It’s good to be king.” Except in this case, I say “It’s good to be the Congressman.”
