Johnson City, Tenn. -- Some neighborhoods in the Tri-Cities have a chance to be cleared out and cleaned up thanks to state money leftover from the Bush Administration.
Foreclosed homes and empty buildings in Johnson City, Bristol, Kingsport, Greeneville, Erwin and Sneedville will be bought, renovated, and rented to low-income families.
The First Tennessee Development District is working with non-profit community development organizations to buy, renovate and own the properties. and they're working with the Appalachain Regional Coalition on Homelessness to find eligible low-income families to rent the homes.
Offers on homes are being made, and contracts need to be set by the end of September.
"We're planning on making these really nice units so they'll have a nice affordable place to live that they can be proud of," says Sherry Trent, with the First Tennessee Development District.
Organizers hope to get families into homes within the next two years.
