Virginia Intermont College has been in existence for 125 years, which is a blessing to our area in so many ways. I trust that everyone is aware of how essential education is to the betterment of our town and to this area. I do not believe, however, that most of us have considered how vital a college is to our city and to our area. If you own a business in Bristol, do business here, live here, or work here, are you not aware of how much Virginia Intermont College contributes to our economy?
The college employs almost 300 people, and has more than 500 students. This amounts to an economic contribution of $32 million per year to our economy.
Virginia Intermont has had difficult financial problems the last few years. We came very close to losing the college. Fortunately several successful contributors and businesses came forward with their generous support. As a businessperson, you or I can do nothing to keep a factory, plant or business from closing. We certainly have lost a number of these. Had Virginia Intermont College been forced to shut down, it would have been equal to losing several plants.
Virginia Intermont, in order to survive, will continue to need financial support from each and every business person living here and conducting business here. It should be your responsibility and mine. Each of us must understand, appreciate and support Virginia Intermont. Please accept this responsibility. Make a contribution today. This will not only benefit the college, but will add to the well being of every business and every person in our area.
