Jonesborough, Tenn. -- In 1783, Congress signed the Treaty of Paris and ended the Revolutionary War.

The year was also a notable one for an area church.

On Sunday, Cherokee Baptist Church celebrated their 226th Anniversary.

Music Director Bill Stoots said settlers from North Carolina moved west in search of religious freedom, landed in Washington County, and started their own congregation on the Samuel Bayless Farm.

Sinking Creek and Buffalo Ridge might disagree, but Stoots said his church is the oldest in Tennessee.

"A lot of memories in that church," Stoots said. "And the old church bell, we still have that in our vestibule."

The first church also served as a public school.
