AARP will celebrate its 2009 National Day of Service and Remembrance on Sept. 11. As part of this national celebration, the Greater Bristol Chapter of AARP will visit the King’s Mountain Supportive Housing facility that is located in the refurbished nursing quarters of the old King’s Mountain Hospital on State Street. Local chapter members will deliver items that can be used by the 12 current residents of the facility. In addition, the residents will be given Meditation Records sheets from the AARP’s national Web site called Create the Good. The chapter members will also be given a tour of the facility by Mr. Travis Worley, supportive housing manager.
AARP was founded in 1958 by a California educator, Ethel Percy Andrus, who, upon finding a retired teacher friend of hers living in an enlarged chicken coop in her retirement, had a vision to make life better for retired Americans of all walks of life. The motto that Dr. Andrus chose for her new organization is “To Serve, Not To Be Served.” Dr. Andrus is a shining example of what one person can do to make a difference in the lives of many other people, and the lot of most retirees in the United States is light years from what it was 51 years ago when this organization was founded.
