Students and staff of Boones Creek Elementary School will be releasing over 500 red balloons on Wednesday, October 28, at 2:30 p.m. in honor of Red Ribbon Week.
Red Ribbon Week brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.
The event serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. And, perhaps more importantly, Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.
Other events for Red Ribbon Week in Washington County schools include:
• Monday, October 26 – “Don’t Let Drugs Turn Your Day” – everyone can wear their clothes inside out
• Tuesday, October 27 – “Hugs Not Drugs Day” – younger students can bring in their favorite stuffed animal
• Wednesday, October 28 – “Red Rally Day” – everyone wear red- red socks, red hats, red shirts, red pants, read shoes, etc. We will be celebrating by students signing a pledge that they promise to stay drug-free. We will be gathering around the level area outside of the school next to parking lot at 2:30 PM and everyone will release a “red non-toxic balloon” promising to stay drug-free. Each balloon will have a note inside from each person with their first name, classroom teacher’s name, and school address asking to send back a note to the school if they get this to let us know how far the balloon went.
• Thursday, October 29 – “Sock It To Drugs Day” – everyone wear the craziest socks they can find – Writing Prompt for Grades 2-4 “Why I Need to be drug-free” and for Grades K-1 – have a coloring contest where they draw and color a picture with a drug prevention theme – teachers can help them choose this. The students can work on the writing prompts and coloring contest all week but need to turn these into Mrs. Leonard on Thursday morning.
