A Kingsport man who tried to rape his stepdaughter, then tried to kill his wife when she tried to pull him off her daughter, was sentenced to 16 months in prison Monday. Judge Robert Montgomery sentenced Earnest "Jo Jo" Rector for attempted rape and attempted murder. On January 12, 2008, police say Rector approached his 17-year-old step-daughter with a knife and forced her into a bedroom, where he demanded that the teen to take off her clothes and get into bed.
Reportedly the commotion woke up Rector's wife, Valerie, and she rushed into the room to stop the attack. Police say Rector then grabbed his wife, and cut her throat with the knife. Rector then barricaded himself in another bedroom and didn't come out until after a brief stand off with police.
Rector was given two eight-year sentences. He will serve one hundred percent of the first eight years, then will be eligible for parole after he serves thirty percent of the second eight years. Rector told the judge he wanted to waive a probation hearing and go ahead and serve his time with the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
