The group trying to bring football back to East Tennessee State University is a relentless bunch. Despite recent failed attempts to revive Buccaneer football, supporters continue to push for community support. Saturday they're taking their campaign on the road.
Since ETSU doesn't have a football homecoming to celebrate, the Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation is heading to Tusculum College Saturday to watch the Pioneers take on Catawba. Although they’ll be cheering on Tusculum, ETSU supporters will really have their team in their hearts and on their shirts. They will sport blue and gold to send a message to anyone watching.
"The idea is just to continue the effort of gathering support in the community to one day have ETSU football come back,” Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation Member Matt Wilhjelm said. “Is this going to be the one event that everyone comes and that’s going to be the tipping point to bring back ETSU football? Boy, I hope so. Whether it is or not, I don’t know.”
Tusculum's game kicks-off at 2:00 pm. The Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation will tailgate leading up to the game.
Just last week, an ETSU Athletics' Department spokesperson said the university was still open to bringing football back. However, he also said there is just no funding available right now to restart the program.
