In answer to Leonard Pitts’ column on Oct. 14 titled “ A legal argument and common sense at the court,” Pitts quotes the part of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law,” but he conveniently (as do others) omits part of the remaining phrase which states “or prohibit the free exercise thereof.”
Further, in his column he states “You need only to look at Iran to know the separation of church and state is a good thing.” I am not sure how to interpret this statement.
But let me say to Mr. Pitts: If he were to attempt to practice his religion (other than Islam) in Iran, the powers that be would probably separate his head from his shoulders.
So much for his logic which to me is really the “pits,” as the old folks used to say.
Mr. Pitts, et. al., should give thanks that they live in a country that, up to now, has had freedom of religion rather than one which frees you from religion by cutting off your head.
