Blountville, Tenn. -- Even though it's one of the busiest travel days of the year, Tri-Cities Regional Airport workers reported business as usual.
Airlines expected the decline in air travelers thanks to the recession, and so there weren't many additional flights on the schedule. Workers at the check-in counters at Delta and U.S. Airways said none of the flights Wednesday were full, and some of them had many seats.
Early morning fliers prepared for security with one quart plastic bags with liquids, and took off shoes, and metal. They say that even with jacked-up holiday prices, and lay-overs, flying was the best way to get to their thanksgiving destination.
"That was my wife," said Dwayne Taylor of Elizabethton. "I was content on driving, and she decided flying might be better, so I came home from work one day, and all of a sudden we were flying."
While Thanksgiving Eve's flight schedule was normal, for Thanksgiving day, and Friday, airlines may go on a "holiday schedule," where air traffic will decrease. Tri-Cities Regional is bracing itself for Sunday -- which is expected to be swamped with travelers.
