Johnson City, Tenn. -- Rob and Karen Nourse had a conversation with their son last Christmas, after he found out he was on his way to Afghanistan.

Spc. Fred Greene told them he valued his personal life, and wanted to keep it personal in the event of his death.

But Greene never made it that far. He died before his time, when a gunman opened fire on soldiers at Fort Hood Texas.

Greene's parents spoke out for the first time Saturday.

The Nourses said their "road of heartache" has been long and rough, but community support has helped them along.

That support will continue to Sunday, with a motorcycle benefit ride organized by Rolling Thunder and Fountain of Life Bible Church.
