Hundreds of revelers watched Elizabethton light up its 90-foot tall Christmas tree Tuesday night. 11 Connects was there live for the tree lighting where more than 1,000 lights came to life.

The lights illuminated the crowd as they drank hot apple cider and listened to Christmas carols sung by Miss Watauga Valley and the Elizabethton High School chorus. Singer Chelsey Austin said the night is always special for her.

"Christmas is my favorite time of year and it's to bring families together...and when you see the tree light up it's just very special," said Austin.

Organizers place the tree being planted somewhere around 1861 and say it is very unusual for a fraiser fur to survive for so many years at this high altitude. But, this one is genetically superior to other trees in the region, helping it last for more than a century.
