A Johnson City couple will face first degree murder charges, after police say their negligence led to the death of their two month old daughter. On March 6 of this year, Jessica Adkins found her two month old daughter deceased in her home at 206 Edna Court. An autopsy was performed on the child and showed that the young girl had hemorrhages of the brain, optic nerve hemorrhages, and skull fractures. The autopsy also revealed 4-7 rib fractures. The cause of death was determined to be blunt trauma to the head. An investigation revealed that the child's father, Russell Long, had been babysitting the child while Adkins was at work for a few weeks. During interviews, police say Long gave different versions of what may have caused the injuries to his daughter. He told investigators the child had rolled off a couch on February 27, about a week before her death. Long did not tell Adkins of the incident, nor did they try to get the child any medical attention, despite the child throwing up and refusing to eat during the week leading up to her death.
Russell Long and Jessica Adkins are both charged with first degree murder, and remain behind bars at the Washington County Detention Center. Long has a one million dollar bond, while Adkins has no bond, due to a violation of probation. They are set to appear in court on February 1.
