A popular thoroughfare in North Johnson City now looks like a parking lot. Repaving work on North Roan Street in front of the Johnson City Mall is slowing traffic to a snails pace.

The construction goes from Sunset Drive to Mockingbird Lane. In its wake, rough pavement and closed lanes.

Businesses along the route say the work prevents customers from shopping. Gems and Whims manager Alison Albritton actually closed the shop early this week because customers could not get into the parking lot.

"November is critical...this work out here is not necessary at this time of year...they could've done it this summer when it made sense," said Albritton.

The repaving is part of a project to build a new entrace to the Johnson City Mall. The city's Public Works director Phil Pindzola said the work will be completed this Saturday.

He said the summer temperatures caused the asphalt to move and become bumpy that made the resurfacing necessary.
