Apparently, there are a lot of people living in Washington County, Va., who have no clue as to what is going on in the county. Their talk about jobs and funding for fire and rescue is a complete joke. Budgets for fire and rescue have been not been increased in two years and were even cut by 10 percent this year. Our great Board of Supervisors found it necessary, though, to give the Barter Theatre its 10 percent back. Where do our priorities lie?
Apparently, we have our needs and our wants confused. Mr. McCrady talks about the ball fields he wants and the library he wants, but then helps push jobs out of the county to fund these wants. Don’t misunderstand, these are good things to have but when we make a decision to cut budgets then we need to weigh or needs and wants very carefully.
I believe that Mr. McCrady has been a roadblock for jobs trying into the county; he voted against the Travel Center in Meadowview without any concrete evidence to support it, he also helped push out the ethanol plant jobs in Bristol over to Tennessee. We have two industrial parks in the county that are practically empty.
We desperately need a turnover in our board. We need leaders instead of followers, like Jack McCrady. We have to attract new business and create jobs instead of trying to find excuses as to why they can’t locate in our county. The decision to vote for Mr. Straten should be a no-brainer to any resident in this district. Do not let this opportunity slip by to make a necessary change that will better the future of Washington County, Va.
