Poll shows McDonnell with double-digit lead over Deeds

Republican Bob McDonnell has a double-digit lead over his opponent in the governor’s race in most regions of Virginia – including Southwest Virginia – according to poll results released Saturday.

The poll also shows that McDonnell has significantly improved his lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds during the past two weeks.

McDonnell had an 8-point lead over Deeds statewide in the Oct. 11 poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. He now has a 12-point lead statewide, as well as in the Roanoke-Southwest Virginia region.

The two candidates are seeking to replace Gov. Tim Kaine in Tuesday’s general election. Kaine is not seeking re-election due to term limits.

Conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling for the Bristol Herald Courier and other Media General newspapers, the poll released Saturday shows that 52 percent of likely voters in the Roanoke-Southwest Virginia region would choose McDonnell if the election was held the day they were asked. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus four points and is based on phone calls conducted Wednesday and Thursday.

The poll also showed that in the Southwest region, 40 percent of the voters questioned would choose Deeds, and 8 percent remain undecided.

Statewide, the poll shows that 60 percent of the men who responded favored McDonnell, while women were more evenly split between the candidates, with 47 percent favoring Deeds and 46 percent favoring McDonnell.

And among all voters statewide, 53 percent favored McDonnell and 41 percent would pick Deeds.

The poll included 6 percent undecided voters across the state, and 8 percent in the Roanoke-Southwest Virginia region.

The Republican candidate also has double-digit leads in the Lynchburg-Southside Virginia, Shenandoah-Piedmont and Richmond metropolitan regions.

In Hampton Roads, McDonnell’s lead is much smaller, at 8 points. And in the heavily Democratic Northern Virginia region, McDonnell is trailing Deeds by 5 points.

Voters casting ballots in this election also will pick the state’s next lieutenant governor, attorney general and various candidates for other state and local offices.

A Mason-Dixon poll released Friday found that the state’s voters would likely choose Republicans to fill the first two of these offices. The results from that poll found that Republican Bob Bolling has a 13-point lead over Democrat Jody Wagner in the state’s lieutenant governor race, while Republican Ken Cuccinelli has a 14-point lead over Democrat Steve Shannon in the attorney general’s race.
