Tomorrow morning the Sullivan County Imagination Library (SCIL) will celebrate the delivery of the 200,000th book delivered through the reading program that was pioneered by Dolly Parton.
Tennessee Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey will read to the children in conjunction with the celebration. Vice President of Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation, Clayborne Gayden will also make an appearance. The event will take place at First Presbyterian Church Friday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at 100 W. Church Street, Kingsport.
"The Sullivan County Imagination Library is a vital organization that promotes reading and is a critical part of early childhood education," said Lt. Governor Ramsey. "Surpassing 200,000 books distributed free to the children of our region is a major milestone. We are proud of this organization and the people that support them that make children’s books available for all the children under five in Sullivan County."
Through this program, more than 10,488 children in Sullivan County have received a free book a month from birth to five years of age. The SCIL is based on a model of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Currently, there are approximately 5,049 (57%) children enrolled in the program. More than 3,979 children have graduated from the program.
The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation contributes half of the cost of the books, but the remaining money necessary to make this program possible must come from local funding.
