RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Starting in July, some boaters will be
required to take safety courses in order to operate a motorboat or
personal water craft in Virginia waters.
The General Assembly passed a law in 2007 that will eventually
make boating safety classes a requirement. By 2016, all boaters
will be required to take the safety class and carry a course
completion card when operating a watercraft.
But after July 1 of this year, personal watercraft operators 20
years old or younger will have to be a card-carrying graduate of a
boating safety course.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will
enforce the new regulations.
