NASHVILLE, May 8, 2009 — Joshua Shepherd, an 11th grader at Tri-Cities Christian School in Jonesborough, has won third place in an annual Law Day essay contest sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association.
This year’s first place award went to senior Nathan House of Nashville and second place went to ninth grader Desiree Kamerman of Knoxville. Students placing in the top three received cash prizes for their winning entries. In addition, their essays will be displayed at the TBA’s annual convention in Memphis June 18-20. Each year, the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division holds a statewide art and essay contest in conjunction with Law Day – a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, Law Day provides an opportunity for young people to learn about the law and the American judicial system and an opportunity for lawyers to serve their communities.
The theme of this year’s contest was “A Legacy of Liberty: Celebrating Lincoln’s Bicentennial,” which was chosen to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln and spur debate on whether the goals of the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence have been met.
