NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Phil Bredesen says higher education in Tennessee will receive $470 million in federal stimulus money over the next two years, which he believes will prevent deep cuts and hopefully hold tuition increases to a minimum.
The Democratic governor discussed his long-term state spending plan with reporters Monday morning before a budget presentation to lawmakers later in the evening.
Bredesen says the state's public colleges and universities will receive $100 million by the end of this year, with the rest to be divided over the next two years.
Higher education accounts for about $1.3 billion of the state budget. Bredesen warned that a reduction may still be necessary once the stimulus money runs out.
However, he says "higher education has dodged a bullet in the short run."
