Infrared scanning can detect missing insulation and water damage that the naked eye cannot see.
Infrared technology is making its way into the home inspection business. Michael Pyne of American Infrared Maintenance says the infrared scanner he has can detect problems such as missing insulation and water damage that the naked eye cannot see. "We're finding missing insulation," says Pyne, "what appears to be missing insulation above the ceilings, possible water damage, which could lead to bigger problems."
Pyne adds that by being able to know where the problems are and being able to correct them will help keep money in homeowner's wallets. "If you do correct the problems we find with infrared," he says, "you do make your house more energy efficient, your electric bill will go down." He says they can help schools by pinpointing roof leaks, so they may not have to replace an entire roof. "A new roof can cost 2 or 3,000 or more, if we come in and find certain areas, we can save them a hundred thousand or more."
