Add Salsarita’s Mexican Cantina to the growing list of businesses falling off the economic cliff at the Linden Square in Bristol, Va. Like The Dicing Diva, Quinzos Subs and American Mattress Outlet before it, Salsarita’s is the latest casualty in the strip shopping mall.
But just two weeks ago, teens and families filled the dining room to feast on tacos and nachos. And in January, the store began offering a “recession special” – dinner for a family of four for $19.99.
Perhaps it was too little, too late. Today the restaurant’s dining room is empty and the phone is disconnected. If you need a Salsarita’s fix, you’re going to have to drive to Kingsport or Johnson City, Tenn., to get it. Toasted subs, mattresses and now cheap Mexican food are lost from the Linden Square shops.
We hate to lose Salsarita’s in Bristol – the loss of any business means lost jobs and taxes and more stress on neighboring firms.
Still anchoring the Linden Square strip are Home Decorators, The Pepper Jack Grille and Pet Partners, but the center looks increasingly snaggle-toothed as its neighbors collapse and disappear.
