Representatives for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and U.S Rep. Phil Roe, R-1st, told about 50 local business leaders on Monday that the response to the recently signed stimulus bill has been overwhelmingly negative.
“I don’t think its any secret that a lot of people have called and said they were against the stimulus package,” Lana Moore, Alexander’s field representative, said about the $787 billion bill of which about $3.8 billion is slated for Tennessee.
Meanwhile, Bill Snodgrass, Roe’s district director, said “the response we’ve gotten has been overwhelmingly against the stimulus package.”
He also briefly outlined Tennessee’s stimulus allocation, which includes about $1.6 billion for TennCare, $1.2 billion for K-12 and special education and nearly $600 million for highway and bridge projects. The state will also get $171 million in "flex-funds" to help with budget shortfalls.
Roe, and Bridgett Baird, field representative for U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., both were expected to speak at the Bristol Chamber of Commerce Governmental Relations meeting at the Bristol Public Library, but bad weather stranded them at airports.
