Carter County rescue crews spent close to five hours Monday rescuing a woman who jumped over 50 feet from Twisting Falls in the county.
A group of about eight college students from Appalachian State University and Lees-McRae College went hiking Monday afternoon in a densely wooded area, about one mile from the North Carolina state line. Their destination? Twisting Falls, where they wanted to jump off the falls into the water below.
According to one of the hikers, all of the hikers made the 50 foot jump successfully, except for one girl, who landed on her back. Dropping from that distance one one's back can cause major injuries. Because there is no cell phone service in the area, the other hikers had to hike out of the mountain to find help.
Rescuers arrived soon after, from three Carter County volunteer fire departments and the Carter County Emergency Rescue Squad. It took crews five hours to rescue the woman. They had to swim her through water and carry her up some very steep cliffs.
Rescuers said the girl was in major pain and complained of stomach pain, but would not reveal her condition. Wings Air Rescue took the victim to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment.
The area is a popular hiking destination for college students, who like to jump off of cliffs into the water below.
