BRISTOL, Va. – A free prescription drug discount card is now available for city residents through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities.

Earlier this spring, the City Council approved making the cards available for city residents who don’t have health insurance or pharmacy benefits, or those whose prescriptions aren’t covered by insurance, according to a news release.

The average savings is 20 percent off the retail price of many commonly prescribed drugs.

The cards have no restrictions on age or income and can be used at about 15 pharmacies in the city and about 59,000 nationwide.

“In the current economic climate, where many people are watching what they spend, the city of Bristol Virginia is happy to be able to offer the prescription discount card program to our residents,” Mayor Jim Rector said in the release.

Cards are available at City Hall, the city courthouse, Bristol Public Library, the Senior Center, the Social Security office and Bristol Virginia Utilities. Cards also are available online at www.bristolva.org.
