New Law Punishes Teens By Taking Away Their License

»  Comments | Post a Comment

If you're a student, and you live in Virginia - your driver's license could be suspended for missing too many days of school.

A new law, effective July 1, would allow juvenile courts to suspend a minor's driver's license if they missed more than 10 unexcused, consecutive days from school.

The judge can suspend the student's driver's license for any period of time until the minor turns 18. If the student has withdrawn from school, or transferred, exceptions will be made.

Once their license is withdrawn, a teen caught driving would be guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor and could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

If students lose their driving privilege under this new law, they may apply to the court for a restricted license under specific circumstances. They must either:
• be employed at least four hours a day and at least 20 hours a week,
• have a medical condition that requires them to be able to drive, or
• be the only person in the household with a driver's license.
