A plant with more than five decades of service to the Tri-Cities region will shut down. The move will leave more than one hundred people out of work.

Today, Dean Foods announced plans to close its PET Dairy operations on Konnarock Road in Kingsport.

A Dean Foods spokesperson told 11 Connects after a study of operations, the company determined it would be more cost-effective to shift the Kingsport PET Dairy operations to other facilities in the area. However, the company did not comment on exactly which facilities.

Dean Foods told us production at the Kingsport facility will be phased out over the next 90 days and will cease during the week of September 7th.

The move will eliminate about 120 plant, administrative and over-the-road driver positions. Fresh Dairy Direct Route Sales Drivers will not be impacted.

Deans Foods said it is committed to helping all employees find new jobs and will retain recruitment professionals to help with job searches.

As for the PET Dairy Kingsport property, Dean Foods said it is weighing its options to sell or lease it in the future.

In 1953, Pet Dairy moved its production to the Kingsport property. It became part of Dean Foods in 2001.
