Sheriff Fred Newman of Washington County, Va., is in the running for a high-ranking job with the U.S. Marshal’s Service -- a move that could set up an election to find a replacement.
Newman, with slightly more than two years left in his current term, has been sheriff since Jan. 1, 2000. He needs presidential approval and a U.S. Senate appointment to take over as the marshal for the Western District of Virginia.
Competing with Newman for the U.S. Marshal slot is Roanoke County Sheriff Gerald Holt, according to a U.S. Senate document. There is no fixed date for when an appointment will be made.
Read Wednesday’s Bristol Herald Courier for a profile of Newman and details on any special election that would be required.
