Providing Food For Kids While School Is Out

»  Comments | Post a Comment

As schools let out for summer, many children in this region lose their opportunity during the day to have a nutritious meal.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has announced its sponsorship of the 2009 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) at Central Elementary School, 735 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Bristol, TN 37620.

Any child under the age of 18 in need of a meal throughout the summer is encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is not required. Lunch is available at this site Monday – Thursday, June 8 through July 30, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Eighty-seven percent of children in Feeding America’s client households, who receive subsidized school meals, often go hungry during the summer months because their families are unaware of the Summer Food Service Program.
In Northeast Tennessee 47% of children receive free or subsidized meals at school.

Through the summer food service program children can receive a free summer meal. The Food Bank’s sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program is made possible through a grant from “America Gives Back” (formerly charity projects entertainment fund) and support from the Corporation for National and Community Service VISTA/Americorp program.

For more information on the Central Elementary School Summer Food Service visit the site during the hours listed above or call the Food Bank at (423)477-4053.
