Jonesborough, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee Volunteers Peyton Manning, Phil Fulmer, and Bobby Scott played a round of golf at The Ridges golf course in Jonesborough Monday, as part of the annual Golf Classic fundraiser for the Mountain States Foundation. It was the 18th tournament, and while each year collects over a hundred thousand dollars, this year's celebrity presence brought more. Organizers expect at least $160,000 in funds raised.
Scott Niswonger asked his Volunteer friends to play as a draw to raise money for the new Niswonger Children's Hospital at Johnson City Medical Center. The tournament and Sunday night party sold out immediately. People paid thousands of dollars in an auction for the chance to play for the day with the Indianapolis Colts quarterback (Manning). A signed jersey and signed football sold for at least five thousand dollars each.
Manning has his own philanthropy, the "PeyBack Foundation," that helps sick and injured children in Indiana, Tennessee, and Louisiana. He shares a passion for helping kids with Niswonger, and credits his spirit for giving back to his father, Archie Manning.
