In Northeast Tennessee twenty-five thousand children fall under the proverty line. A lot of those children receive free, or reduced lunches and breakfasts, during the school year. Now, with schools on Summer break, some of those kids are not getting the food they need.
In the past, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has helped out by providing food to a program called "Kids Cafes" at local organizations like The Boys and Girls Club, The Coalition for Kids, and Girls Inc. This Summer Second Harvest is also helping out with the "Summer Feeding Program". This program allows Second Harvest to feed children directly. The first location for the "Summer Feeding Program" is at Central Elementary in Bristol, Tennessee.
Right now Second Harvest is distributing a half-a-million pounds of food monthly from their location in Gray, Tennessee. That is an increase of 150,000 pounds per month. Overall thirty-thousand people in Northeast Tennessee are being served by Second Harvest, alot of them children.
If you would like to help Second Harvest this Summer, there are two ways you can lend a hand. First, if you are parent, or caregiver, and know of a child that is is hungry and needs food, contact Second Harvest at 423-477-4053. Second, if you want to help out, you can by donating food, or money to Second Harvest.
Even one can of donated food, can help a child that might go to bed hungry this Summer.
