Christy Vance knows it was a leap of faith that led her and a group of classmates at Regent University in Virginia Beach to travel the country this summer, performing theatre shows for free. "It's kind of our calling," Vance says. The group wants to bring the arts to people who may not otherwise see it. So they have traveled to places such as Detroit, Michigan, and Columbus, Ohio, and now to Kingsport.
Actor Chad Rasor says they do it to share their passion for the theatre, and he hopes their audiences come away feeling that passion. "I hope they just come away with a love for theatre," Rasor says, "if nothing else, just leaving going 'I want to see more theatre.'" Vance says they also hope to give a positive message with each performance. "We like to do things that are redemptive and encouraging and just make people's day better," says Vance.
The two groups performing are the Drifting Theatre, and the Uncovered Theatre. They will be performing a more modern version of Pilgrim's Progress, along with Shakespeare's 12th Night, Monday and Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. at the Bays Mountain Amphitheatre. They will also be having two workshops which are $20 each. The first is for Ages 13-18 and is Monday, July 27 at Journey Church, 102 Old Stage Road, in Gray, from 6-9 p.m. The second is also at Journey Church, and is for ages 8-18, Thursday July 30, from 1-5 p.m.
