A new law went into affect on Wednesday that requires school systems throughout Tennessee to punish any student who is bullying another student.
"The more that we monitor these types of situations with children, the more we are involved with it, the more it solves the problem. said Michael Barrett, parent.
Dave Chupa with Johnson City Schools said bullying is something they've been trying to prevent for years.
"We're going to try and stop it as soon as we no about it as early as we can," Chupa said.
Experts say bullying doesn't have to be violent. Students can also bully their classmates through a text message or even an email.
Chupa said they will look into any situation that may be bullying and determine the type of punishment. He said it could be anything from a verbal warning to a suspension.
