RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Labor market analysts are preparing to
release the latest unemployment report for North Carolina.
The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina is
scheduled to release its jobs report for December on Friday as
state leaders try to assess how badly the state's economy has
deteriorated.
The Employment Security Commission reported last month that
North Carolina's unemployment rate surged to 7.9 percent in
November - its highest since 1983. A record number of people -
359,000 - couldn't find a job.
State leaders have worried that North Carolina's job market may
get worse in 2009 as the large banking industry prepares to shed
jobs.
North Carolina's unemployment rate was at 5 percent in December
of 2007.
