Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says there will be no charges after an investigation into drug use by Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.
Lott announced the results of his investigation of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps at 3 p.m. Monday.
The Sheriff's Office has been investigating Phelps since a picture of him with a bong, taken at an off-campus party at the University of South Carolina, showed up in a British newspaper.
The Sheriff says they don’t have anything significant enough to charge anyone, including Phelps, with drug violations.
Lott says he has spoken with Phelps and Phelps has agreed to help educate people in an attempt to keep them away from drugs. The investigation began when a picture of Phelps with a bong, taken at an off-campus party at the University of South Carolina, showed up in a British newspaper. The Sheriff says there have been past drug violations at two homes, in one of which the party took place. Sheriff Lott says they did not treat this investigation any differently than any other investigation.
Phelps was suspended by USA Swimming for three months in the wake of after the photo emerged. Kellogg Co. said it would not renew its endorsement deal with Phelps.
