BRISTOL, Tenn. – Police officers have arrested and charged a man with assaulting his girlfriend, after a four-hour standoff culminating with the use of tear gas.
With several inches of snow blanketing the region, officers responded at 3 a.m. to an apartment on Tulip Grove Rd. after receiving a report that a man had choked and threatened his girlfriend with a firearm.
The first officers to arrive on the scene were able to extract the female victim from harm’s way, according to a police statement released today.
The hostage negotiation and SWAT teams of the Bristol Tennessee Police Department spent four hours attempting to make contact with the alleged offender, identified as David Shaffer. Shaffer made contact within officers within 15 minutes of them deploying gas, according to the statement.
Shaffer gave himself up without further incident. He is charged with aggravated assault and was transported to the Sullivan County Jail.
