ABINGDON, Va. – All proceeds from an upcoming Barter Theatre show will be donated to fire victim Rita Forrester.
Proceeds from the 7:45 p.m. performance of “WMKS: Christmas 1942” on Dec. 23 will go to Forrester, the director of the Carter Family Fold, who lost everything, including her husband, in a Dec. 6 fire at her Scott County home.
Barter company members and staff have developed relationships with Forrester, whose enterprise preserves the music of The Carter Family, according to a Barter news release.
In her time of need during the holiday season, Barter officials are asking the community to support Forrester.
“If the 7:45 p.m. performance sells out, patrons may choose to have the ticket prices for the 2 p.m. show donated to the Forrester family as well,” theater Artistic Director Richard Rose said.
The theater’s development department will also accept donations for the family.
The early morning fire destroyed the family’s home, its contents, two cars and claimed the life of Bob Forrester and the couple’s cat.
Rita Forrester is the granddaughter of A.P. Carter, who, along with Sara and Maybelle Carter established a music career now honored by the Country Music Hall of Fame. Forrester’s mother, Janette Carter, established the Fold, which opened in 1976.
In the early morning hours of Dec. 6, three volunteer fire departments stationed in and around Scott County responded to the house, just off A.P. Carter Highway, A relief fund has been set up at the BB&T Bank in Gate City. Donations can be sent to: Rita Janette Forrester Relief Fund, BB&T Bank, 110 Gateway Plaza, Gate City, Va., 24251.
