Today is the busiest day of the year for the US Postal Service, and businesses like FedEx and UPS.
The Postal Service expects to process over eight hundred million letters and packages today.
The Main Street Post Office in Johnson City expects to see twice as much mail run through their office than on a normal Monday.
The Mail Processing Supervisor says people have about a week to get their Christmas letters and gifts in the mail if they want to send them first class.
After that, they’ll have to rely on more expensive services like Priority and Express mail to get those Christmas items to their loved ones on time.
He also says that the higher mail traffic at the Post Office will continue.
"Right up to the next two weeks we'll be heavier than normal. It'll wind down usually the day before Christmas," says Mail Processing Supervisor Stephen Barnaby.
There are a couple of things you can do to make the trip to the Post Office a little more smooth.
Make sure the address is legible, and on the top and side of the package. Use strong, sturdy tape. And double check the zip code.
