BRISTOL, Va. – A pair of Bristol men have been charged with burglarizing 15 houses in the city and in Washington County – after police recovered an estimated $20,000 worth of stolen items, everything from televisions to jewelry, computers and guns.
Together, Thomas D. Hill, 44, of Bristol, Va., and Matthew Lawton Headden, 21, of Bristol, Tenn., face 63 criminal charges, the Washington County Sheriff’s office said in a written statement.
Sheriff Fred Newman could not be reached Wednesday for details on the case.
The news statement said 10 homes in the county and five in the city were hit during daytime hours while homeowners were away. Targeted items included anything that could be easily carried, investigators said.
Headden is being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon on a $10,000 bond. Hill is being held without bond, the sheriff’s release states.
A third person, Armon Neal Beavers, 67, of Bristol, Va., has been charged with receiving and possession of a firearm by a felon, after being accused of taking a stolen gun from Hill and Headden.
Charges filed against Headden in Washington County General District Court show that some of the county burglaries occurred throughout November.
County court records also show that police cited Headden with a minor traffic offense Nov. 30 – two days after the last county burglary listed.
Records also show that Headden received a 30-day suspended sentence Tuesday for a misdemeanor shoplifting charge resulting from a Nov. 3 incident at Walmart. It could not be determined if the shoplifting incident is related to the burglary case.
The burglary charges against Hill were not listed in Washington County court records Tuesday.
Charges against both Hill and Headden stemming from the burglaries in the city could not be found in Bristol General District Court. Records do show that Hill pleaded guilty in 2007 to single counts of grand larceny and of breaking and entering. He received a six-year suspended sentence.
