Greeneville, Tenn. -- As part of a monthly series on 11 Connects, we profile the organizations making a difference in our community. This week we focus specifically the American Cancer Society.
Dealing with cancer is a struggle for an entire family, and one thing the American Cancer Society can do is to ease the financial burden. Oftentimes, people need to travel for surgeries or treatments, and instead of spending money for a hotel near a hospital, the american cancer society offers what they call the Hope Lodge.
Martha Reynolds won her battle with breast cancer, and when her husband found out he had prostate cancer in 2006, they stayed at the Hope Lodge in Nashville as he received treatments.
"I think the biggest thing is the people that you see there," said Reynolds. "They really inspire you, and they give you courage to face what you're facing."
The Hope Lodge allows cancer patients to forget about financial worries, and focus on what they need to do to get well. It can be a crucial comfort for many fighting cancer.
