Tens of thousands of homes in Southwest Virginia and nearly 5,000 homes in Northeast Tenn. serviced by Appalachian Power were without power early this evening due to severe storms that hit the area this afternoon.
According to a press release by AEP, icy and windy conditions overnight in much of their service area caused an interruption in power to at least 15,000 customers. Then, with today’s winds, even more outages hit the area.
AEP crews are currently assessing damage across the service area, but it is unknown when power will be returned to all areas. A spokesperson for the company stated that crews at this time are in assess mode, and that crews will be assessing and repairing damaged lines - attempting to tackle the areas with the most outages first.
