Clean water on its way to Greggtown residents

Johnson City Mayor Jane M. Myron, U.S Rep. Phil Roe, Greggtown resident Bonnie Ford, and state Rep. Dale Ford, R-Jonesborough, share a celebratory moment as ground is broken on the Greggtown Area Waterline Extension Project. Bonnie Ford has lived in the area for 50 years and will soon have potable water in her home.

After a long wait, and a struggle by homeowners in the Greggtown area of Washington County, their day has finally arrived.

Work officially began today on the Greggtown Area Waterline Extension Project. This waterline extension will provide potable drinking water to nearly 90 homes that currently have poor water quality and quantity.

When completed, the project will add 16,500 linear feet of waterlines to the community.

“This project has been proposed for almost 10 years and until recently was not cost effective to perform,” said Tom Witherspoon, director of Water and Sewer Services.

“Federal and state funding -- and cooperation between the City of Kingsport and the City of Johnson City -- has made it possible to redesign the project scope. Johnson City is now able to proceed with the project utilizing a combination of grants and loan funding.”

Project funding includes: a $435,000 USDA/RDA low-interest loan, $434,000 in grant money from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and $167,800 in grant money from the State of Tennessee through the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Merkel Brothers Construction has been awarded the contract to perform the work.
