Strong winds rip through downtown Erwin

Trees snapped from strong winds, pulling down power lines and making a mess.

Erwin, Tenn. -- High winds caused havoc in Unicoi County today. They had leaves swirling, traffic lights blowing, and trash cans barreling down the streets.
Trees were ripped up, power lines blew down, and even the glass in the storefront window of downtown Erwin's Clinchfield Drug Co. burst.
The Erwin Police, Unicoi County Sheriff's Department, Erwin Public Works, and power companies were out in full force dealing with wind-struck areas, and traffic and clean-up that followed.
"I've been here two years, and just about this time every year we have a time out of it," said Matt Bennett with Erwin Public Works. "Wind, just trees down left and right."
Each scene took about forty-five minutes to an hour to clean up and re-open roads, but crews cleaned the messes as quickly as they could.
No injuries were reported due to wind damage.
