ABINGDON, Va. – Thanks to seven town employees, a handful of cables and a single bucket truck – it’s looking a lot like Christmas in Abingdon.
The town’s new Christmas tree – a 22-foot blue spruce – was planted in the Barter green Tuesday afternoon.
After digging a 3-foot hole, seven town employees, two working on the bucket truck high above the tree, lifted the freshly cut evergreen into place. They then added cables to support the tree for the holiday season, and of course strung the lights.
“It’s great. Now it’s officially Christmas,” James Agner, the town’s sports and community events coordinator, said once the tree was standing.
Purchased for $400 from a Whitetop-area farm, the tree was estimated to be about 20 years old. It’s big debut is scheduled for Thursday, when the town gathers for the official Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6:45 p.m.
Agner said Barter Theatre will keep the tree lit for the season.
The tree lighting will feature Santa Claus and close to 100 children singing Christmas carols.
Nancy Fleming, manager of the Barter Café, said the event is “much anticipated by all.”
