BRISTOL, Va. – A 26-year-old man was arrested after firing a gun inside a Rice Terrace apartment Sunday night, police said Monday.
Sgt. Steven Crawford said police got a 911 call about a shooting around 7:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found Wesley Allen Norton lying on the ground near Mary Street.
Norton looked like he had been beaten, Crawford said, so he was taken to Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Meanwhile, police began piecing together the events of the night and learned Norton was behind the shooting, according to Crawford. Norton is accused of walking into an apartment at the complex’s S building and getting into an argument with three people there.
The police sergeant wasn’t sure exactly why Norton went to the apartment, but said he had been involved in a previous confrontation with a man who lived there.
He said Norton pulled out a gun and pointed it at one of the men. But before the gun was fired, the others wrestled him to the ground, Crawford said.
Norton then managed to fire the gun inside the apartment, but no one was hit, Crawford said. The men took Norton outside and started beating him, he said.
Norton was later arrested at Indian Path by Kingsport police. He will be brought back to Bristol, where he faces one charge of shooting into an occupied building and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
