BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. – A longtime fugitive from the law accused of slaying a Bluff City resident in September 2008 pleaded not guilty to 1st-degree murder on Friday.

Abrey Wayne Fortner, 31, appeared in Sullivan County Criminal Court after he was extradited from North Carolina, where he was arrested in January.

Fortner has a lengthy criminal history that includes malicious wounding, brandishing a firearm and breaking and entering. A grand jury in 2008 indicted him for the murder of Arthur Burchard, who was found with his throat slit at his Bluff City apartment.
