RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Timothy Kaine still has more than a year to serve as governor, but three Democrats are vying for a chance to replace him - and he's staying out of it.
Kaine says he's neutral in the three-way Democratic race between Del. Brian Moran of Alexandria, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell is the lone Republican candidate so far.
Virginia governors cannot succeed themselves in office. Kaine's term expires in January 2010, but the Democratic primary will be in June.
National attention will likely be focused on the gubernatorial race, to see if Democrats can extend their run of electoral successes in the state.
