ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) - The way Unicoi County officials see it, increases in the litigation fee the courts charge are sort of a user tax.
Two increases this year have upped the cost of using the courts from $10 to $50.
The money will be used to build a new workhouse to house work release jail inmates. The project is expected to cost about $2.8 million.
County Mayor Greg Lynch told the Johnson City Press the fee increase puts the cost onto people who use the court system.
Lynch said people who have never received a speeding ticket or gone to court shouldn't be taxed to build the jail.
