Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain made a last ditch effort to gain votes in Virginia today during a visit to the Tri-Cities. Sen. McCain arrived at Tri-City Aviation in Blountville around noon Monday and spoke with thousands of supporters. Alongside his wife, he asked his supporters to knock on doors and get their neighbors, friends, and family members to vote for him Tuesday. McCain assured the crowd, it's not too late to win this election, saying he's been counted out before, but has always come back.
"My opponent is measuring the drapes in the White House," McCain said. "They may not know it, but the Mac is back."
Although he was standing on Tennessee soil, McCain made it clear he was targeting Virginia voters. During his 20 minute speech, he talked about his support for clean coal technology.
"I'm not going to let our coal industry go bankrupt," McCain said. "I'm not going to let coal workers lose their jobs."
He also promised lower energy costs and new ways to fuel the country.
"Sen. Obama opposes offshore drilling," McCain said. "We'll drill offshore and we'll drill now."
McCain also spent several minutes discussing his plans to turn around the economy.
"We're going to cut taxes for working families," McCain promised. "We'll cut business taxes to help create jobs and we'll keep American businesses in America...I won't spend nearly a trillion dollars of your money. Sen. Barack Obama will. I'm going to make government live on a budget just like you do."
His trip to the region was the second stop of a seven state whirlwind tour on the eve of the election. Although he spent a lot of time talking about policy, in the end, he left his supporters with a simple request.
"Don't give up hope," McCain said. "Be strong, have courage, and fight."
