ESSENTIAL GRADUATION INFORMATION

The 2008 commencement ceremony for Powell Valley High School is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 23 at Bullitt Park.

The school will hold an award banquet on May 16 at 9 a.m. inside the school auditorium.

THE STORY OF THE POWELL VALLEY CLASS OF 2008

As the Class of 2008 celebrates the completion of one phase in their lives, a moment of reflection on their high school careers seems appropriate. This class has brought honor and pride to their school and fellow classmates. Their list of accomplishments will long be remembered at Powell Valley High School. Throughout the school year the senior class joined to garner accolades in academics and athletics.

Academically, the Class of 2008 excelled in many areas. Valedictorian and salutatorian honors have been declared. The Valedictorian is Carrie Stuart Mongle and a with GPA of 4.27, and the Co-Salutatorian are Brette Camerann Harding and Nicholas Todd Ratliff with GPAs of 4.19. They lead an impressive list of honor students: Andrew Honeycutt Meador, Jessica Marie Horne, Amanda Mae Mullins, Brantley Keith Phillips, Laura Jayne Stamper, John Michael Allen, Chantel Ruth Brooks, Amanda Jean Murphy, Savannah Marie Arwood, Eric Edward Mabe, Hannah Leigh Lipps, Trey Alan Garrison, Holly Nicole Crabtree, Shonna Brooke Webb, Cory Evan Williams, Paul Cody Childress, Thomas Matthew Vaughn, Kevin Richard Myers, and Brittany Allene Carroll.

The Slemp Foundation Scholarship has been awarded to Chantel Ruth Brooks, Brette Camerann Harding, Andrew Honeycutt Meador, Carrie Stuart Mongle, and Amanda Mae Mullins.

The BETA Club, an honor society open to those students with a cumulative average of 3.4 or better and who are in good standing with the school, hosts a proud list of seniors this year. BETA Club seniors John Michael Allen, Savannah Marie Arwood, Chantal Ruth Brooks, Holly Nicole Crabtree, Trey Alan Garrison, Brette Camerann Harding, Hannah Leigh Lipps, Eric Edward Mabe, Andrew Honeycutt Meador, Carrie Stuart Mongle, Amanda Mae Mullins, Amanda Jean Murphy, Nicholas Todd Ratliff, Laura Jayne Stamper, Thomas Matthew Vaughn, and Shonna Brooke Webb.

As is the custom for the beginning of the year, the senior class voted for SGA officers. This year’s class chose Carrie Stuart Mongle to serve as president, Andrew Honeycutt Meador to serve as treasurer, and Savannah Marie Arwood and John Michael Allen to serve as class representatives.

The senior class also voted on their favorites to be honored as Football Homecoming Queen—Brittanee Rose Stacy; Basketball Homecoming Queen—Brittney Savannah Marie Arwood; Basketball Homecoming King—Nicholas Allen Cress; Prom Queen Tiffany Nicole Caudill; and Prom King Scotty Wayne Mullins.

The performing arts brought recognition to our school as the chorus, band, PACE, and speech and drama classes took honors in competitions through the year. Three senior chorus members earned honors this year as All County Chorus Members. Holly Nicole Crabtree, Amanda Jean Murphy, and Jessee Matthew Profitt earned this honor. The senior member of the PACE team was Holly Nicole Crabtree. Taking first place in the district and region and placing in the top ten at state, the Forensics team earned many honors. Two seniors led the team. Savannah Marie Arwood won 1st place at district, 1st place at region, and 3rd place at state in Storytelling. Carrie Stuart Mongle placed 1st at district, 1st in region, and 6th at state in Poetry. The One-Act Play team was also successful. They placed 2nd in district competition, 2nd in regional competition, and 2nd in state competitions. In the competitions Savannah Marie Arwood earned District, Regional, and State Acting Awards. The PVHS band hosts a long list of seniors. They include Savannah Marie Arwood, Caleb Timothy Holyfield, Brette Camerann Harding, Jacinda Gabriella McQueen, Nathaniel Paul McQueen, Carrie Stuart Mongle, and Amanda Mae Mullins. These students led the PVHS Marching Band to the Lonesome Pine Band Festival where the band placed 2nd in marching and 2nd in music, the drum major placed 1st, the drum line placed 1st, and the color guard placed 2nd. In the Cavalier Band Festival in North Carolina, the majorettes placed 1st and the band placed 4th overall. PACE band members were Caleb Timothy Holyfield who earned 1st chair in xylophone, Nathaniel Paul McQueen who earned 1st chair in drums, and Amanda Mae Mullins who earned 1st chair in flute.

Other academic honors went to co-curricular clubs. In the AFJROTC Dustin Ryan Meade has earned a full scholarship to East Tennessee State University and their ROTC program. Holly Nicole Crabtree was the only senior on the PACE team.

Athletically, the senior class garnered recognition in all areas. Receiving accolades for the senior class in various sports throughout the year include football players, Christopher Lynn Fraley, Jr., and Cedric D’Andre Mitchell who were named to the All District Team, the All Region D team, and 1st Team All State teams. Cedric earned Defensive Back of the Year honors while Christopher was named Defensive Lineman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Delmas Ray Lawson III earned All District and All Region D honors. John Michael Allen, Trey Alan Garrison, James Allen Rhoten, and Terrell Latuan Turner were all members of the All District team. Cody Aaron Collins led the wrestling team to a regular season district championship, 3rd place in the sub-region, and 2nd place in the region. Cody also qualified for the state tournament. The Viking Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country Teams captured the LPD crowns. They were led by Brittanee Rose Stacy and Lauren Ruth Fowler who earned All District honors. David Lee Fannon led the boys’ team earning All District and All Region D honors. The boys’ and girls’ team both advanced to the state competition. This year’s Dance Squad boasted three seniors Morgan Tyler Haines, Hannah Leigh Lipps, and Halie Renee’ Wagner, and the cheerleading squad had three seniors, Brittanee Rose Stacy, Kaley Ashton Callahan, and Savannah Marie Arwood.

The list of accomplishments for this senior class continues to grow as the school year draws to an end. More scholarships will be granted, more titles will be earned in sports that are completing their seasons, and academic excellence awards will be earned. The culmination of these achievements will be recognized as we participate in the graduation exercises in the coming weeks.
